Switzerland Shock Spain
Spain 0-1 Switzerland
(HT0-0)
Fernandes, 52
Switzerland produced a well disciplined performance to earn themselves a victory over the current European Champions Spain. World Cup favourites Spain endured a shocking defeat to Switzerland as World Cup 2010 has produced its first major upset.
Spain dominated the majority of the possession of the game but were unable to produce the quality and flare in the final third that helped them lift the trophy in the European Championships in 2008. Andres Iniesta and Xabi Alonso both hit out from range and came closest to scoring Spain’s first goal in this tournament which tells a lot about their performance.
For all the world class players in their squad such as Fernando Torres, Iniesta, Xavi and David Villa, they did not produce the football that would set the South Africa World Cup alight. Instead they were undone defensively by a long goal-kick, flicked through to Eren Derediyok who bundled it passed goalkeeper Iker Casilas and Fernandes was left with an easy finish.
The pressure on Spain has rapidly increased after a memorable victory for Switzerland. Spain will have to regroup and prepare themselves for the next match against Honduras as they look for their first win. Spain must improve defensively if they want to be able to triumph this World Cup.
